Is Your 501c3 Worth the Cost?

Separation of church and state has taken on a new meaning. I do not believe that to have separation means that we have to remove the bible and/or prayer. No, this mindset is a scheme of the enemy to discourage the church from participating in politics, law, and influencing society.  It has become a trap and even a tool to wash away any evidence of God in our schools, communities, and institutions.  Additionally, there is a new trap or vice that is being used to shut the mouth of the church called a 501©3.  This is also referred to as a non-profit status which allows churches and other organizations to be classified in a way which exempts them from taxes. On the surface this seems like a blessing to the church but instead it may very well prove to be the device that the enemy uses to destroy this nation.

We are entering a day where the voice of God is needed more than ever before in our nation’s history.  If the church does not provide the voice of God to speak truth then who will?  We cannot let the government control what we teach or preach from our pulpits or influence what is taught to our congregations.  It is our responsibility to speak God’s truth in all situations no matter how unpopular it may become.  This week I read an article about some pastors who were telling their congregations not to vote for a particular candidate because there was no fruit or evidence of a relationship with the Lord. These churches were approached by the IRS with threats of removing their 501c3’s if they did not disengage from speaking political viewpoints or opinions.  There was even an IRS agent that went into the church service to spy to make sure they weren’t continuing to preach against the one candidate.

Brothers and sisters, we have to realize that as the end times approach the church may have to take unpopular stands against sins, governments, laws and even other religions in order to be in the will of God. It seems to me that the church would rather take the non-confrontational way in order to preserve peace more than preaching the true word of God. The reality is that the true word of God is going to offend no matter how much we try to give the word in love and humility.

I am reminded of my most recent trip to Nigeria in April. The Nigerian Christians have so much faith that they will preach openly against tyranny and corruption.  In fact, it is common place in Nigeria to be pulled over every mile or so by the armed soldiers who will require a bribe to go the next mile or two before another armed stop.  But, what is interesting to me is that if the armed soldier discovered that you were a Christian they would refuse your money/bribe and wave you on because they fear the church so much that they try not to cross it in any way.  It is strange to me that in our own nation no one seems to fear God or the Church.  The church has become powerless and ineffective in so many ways.  The church operates more out of fear of potential consequences then it does out of the truth and conviction of God’s word.  Furthermore, I believe that the voice of the church is being controlled through censorship tied to the 501c3 and the church doesn’t even see how deceived it has become.   When a church’s non-profit status becomes more important than preaching God’s truth we have reached a sad day.  Yes, I know that it is expensive to run a church, but if we were being honest with ourselves can we really say we are being effective in our government, economy, and communities?  Have we spoken out against false religions, sinful politicians, immoral laws and the moral decay of our society or have we become inward focused where building our church has become more important than being a light in this dark world?  How about the prophets? When is the last time we saw a prophet get on television, or go to a politician and tell them that God said to repent or God says that judgment will come?  Prophets in the Old Testament spoke the true word of God and were backed by the power of God through signs and wonders. These Elijah Day Prophets are coming back for this generation to speak God’s corrective word. He that has a ear to hear let him hear.

If you are a Pastor, Prophet, Evangelist, Teacher or Apostle, I urge you to risk your 501c3 to speak God’s truth in this season.  I will remind everyone reading that Jesus wishes for none to perish and requires us to be a voice to the nations of what He is speaking in that season. It is our responsibility as believers to give the word out of love, compassion and to leave the results to God.

God Bless,

Michael Bacon
